FAQs

1. What is the GDSN and what is it for?

The GDSN (Global Data Synchronisation Network) is a worldwide network of interconnected data pools. This is used to synchronise product information between suppliers and retailers and enables the real-time exchange of standardised and up-to-date product information to improve the data quality and efficiency of business processes throughout the entire supply chain.

By using the GDSN, companies can ensure that their products are described correctly and consistently, leading to a reduction in errors, recalls and complaints. It also facilitates the introduction of new products to the market, as all the necessary information is already available in the system and can be easily accessed. This provides retailers with centralised access to product master data so that they can retrieve the data for retail and e-commerce, but also for apps.

In addition, the GDSN supports compliance with statutory rules and regulations, such as consumer protection legislation.

2. How does GDSN work?

The GDSN works through a network of interoperable data pools and the GS1 Global Registry® to exchange data. Suppliers and customers who want to synchronise trade item and location data with each other perform the following five basic steps:

Step 1: Suppliers prepare their internal data and systems to comply with GS1 standards (GTIN, GLN, etc.).

Step 2: Suppliers upload their data into a GDSN-certified source data pool of their choice (internal or third-party).

Step 3: The data pool sends basic information about each trade item (or party) to the GS1 Global Registry. The GS1 Global Registry stores this information and the location of each trade item's (or each party's) data pool.

Step 4: Data recipients subscribe to the information about the supplier trade item(s) or party in the GS1 Global Registry via their chosen GDSN-certified data pool. The GS1 Global Registry identifies the source data pool of the requested trade item(s) or party.

Step 5: Retail partners carry out the publication/subscription process. After that, trade item (or party) information can be automatically and continuously synchronised between their respective data pools.

3. Which GDSN providers are there?

There are about 45 certified GDSN data pools worldwide. The majority of these data pools are active in one specific country. One of these data pools is the GDSN data pool of the Markant Group, which provides access to the complete GS1 GDSN for both data providers and data buyers.

4. I already have a GDSN provider. How can I change it and what expenses will I incur in the process?

The data only has to be published by the existing provider to a Markant migration GLN. This step is not necessary if the data has already been published to the target market.

This data is then made available to the customer in the Markant system. Before the final change, the data must be depublished once by the customer.

5. Does Markant also offer a service for collecting and publishing my data?

We can make you an individual offer for this. Simply get in touch with our contact persons in Product Information management.

6. I participate in the DQX programme of GS1. Can Markant's solution continue to guarantee data provision to GS1?

Yes, the publications to GS1 for the DQX check as well as the receipt of the feedback can also be done via our GDSN solution.

7. Can data also be uploaded via Excel in the system?

Yes, we offer standard templates here that you can use. If required, we can also prepare your templates for upload or support you in doing so.

8. Can recipient-specific item passes be downloaded?

Download functions are available in Excel. For recipient-specific versions, get in touch with our contact persons in Product Information management.

9. Which target markets and application languages for product registration are supported?

In principle, product information can be published according to the GDSN standard for all countries in the world. Our solution for registering product information also provides support as early as the input stage with the help of a target market-specific quality check for the following countries in the respective national languages: Germany (DE, EN), Austria (DE, EN), Switzerland (DE, EN, FR), Belgium (DE, EN, FR), Luxembourg (DE, EN, FR), Czech Republic (DE, EN, CZ), Poland (DE, EN, PL), Bulgaria (DE, EN, BG), Romania (DE, EN, RO).

10. I already have a PIM system. Can I publish my data from it via Markant GDSN?

Yes, you can submit and publish your product information to us in GDSN standard (CIN), JSON, or XML format.

11. How is data quality ensured?

The validations adopted in the GDSN standard are implemented in the system to ensure uniform data quality. The user is supported intuitively and with help texts to fulfil these and thus ensure data quality.

12. What is a data pool and where can I find a list of GDSN-certified data pools?

To participate in the Global Data Synchronisation Network (GDSN) and register or subscribe to trade item in the GS1 Global Registry®, suppliers and retailers must use a GDSN-certified data pool (DP). A certified data pool is a solution that has been developed according to GS1 standards and whose interoperability has been tested within the GDSN. Only suppliers and retailers using a certified DP can synchronise data via the GDSN.

The list of organisations offering certified DP services can be found at the following link: https://www.gs1.org/services/gdsn/certified-data-pools-list.

14. Why synchronise data?

Synchronised data eliminates data reconciliation errors between retail partners, increasing supply chain efficiency and ensuring accuracy of data in transactions. Today, retail partners incur high, unnecessary costs due to master data issues, such as inefficient information in the supply chain and inaccurate data in transactions. Incorrect orders, deliveries and invoices are responsible for a large part of these costs. In addition, the globalisation of trade has led to an increased need for smooth flow of goods between businesses and better control of supply chain processes, which can be achieved through synchronised communication between retail partners.

By continuously synchronising/harmonising the master data between your system and the systems of your retail partners, you ensure that the master data is identical in all systems. This enables you to trade globally, increases data accuracy between you and your retail partners and reduces costs in your supply chain.

15. What technical support does Markant's GDSN service provide?

Your product information can be stored, administered and released in Markant's GDSN data pool in accordance with the GDSN standard based on the GS1 Germany Community target market profile. In doing so, you can reach all retailers worldwide who in turn use the GDSN. Depending on the target market, your trade items will be published either at target market or GLN level. Your data will be validated on the basis of GDSN and GS1 Germany DQG standard and you will receive corresponding information from us in the event of an error. In addition to Markant product entry via markant.net, Markant can also receive and process data in GDSN format. Furthermore, product-related image data and electronic documents (PDF) can be made available to your retail partners.

16. What data would retail like me to provide?

Retail needs all product information to be processed electronically along the supply chain for maximum efficient processes and to control them. This includes commodity information for EDI processes (ordering, invoicing, warehousing, transport, checkout, etc.) such as:

  • Logistical data
  • Tax information
  • Product descriptions
  • Information on contents and size

In addition, this includes B2B information that supports the end customer and consumer in their purchase decision in the sense of the ECR concept, such as:

  • Information under Food Information Regulation (LMIV) (ingredients, nutritional values, allergens 1169/2011)
  • Health claims
  • Instructions for use
  • Storage instructions

17. Will using Markant's GDSN service help me list and increase awareness of my product?

By reliably providing comprehensive product information, you optimise not only your business processes, but also those of your retail partners. Share real-time product content with all retail partners, give them a permanent overview of your complete assortment and enable brand transparency for all stakeholders. This is how you bring new products to market quickly and easily and fulfil the first step for a faster listing.

18. Do I need prior knowledge or a special software to use the system?

No. You use our trade item entry within the markant.net environment to provide your product information. The application is web-based, structured and intuitively designed. You need internet access and one of the common internet browsers (Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox etc.). The attributes are commented accordingly and there are corresponding tutorials available here in addition to an online manual. Furthermore, you have the possibility to contact our support at any time, who will be happy to assist you with questions or, for example, in jointly creating a trade item.
